2013 Highlights

2013 saw several themes running in parallel. The flowers as they came and went; the Frog who came to visit for a couple of months and chatted away with everyone; raising Polyphemus moth caterpillars.
2013 Flowers

These are some of the spring flowers that showed up in 2013. Here you have pink columbines, orange poppies, forget-me-nots, and in the background raspberries just about to flower. Next is a jack-in-the-pulpit, a deep shade lover.

And here is my earliest blooming primrose and a bed of mixed hyacinths. Indoors hyacinths have an overpowering aroma but outdoors that aroma is just gorgeous.

A few days later, that little hyacinth patch has magically turned into a tulip, grape hyacinth, and forget-me-not patch.

As summer progresses, the pond comes alive with water lilies, water striders, happy fishes and tadpoles.

Most of the summer the bloomers are more subdued. But here is a spectacular hardy hyacinth whose blooms are about 10 inches in diameter.

The faithful asters begin in August and stay till almost October. They are the children of a tall shocking pink New England aster and a low-growing "Purple Dome" aster. Those two hybrid asters died a couple of summers later, but by then the children had become a beautiful shade of purplish pink, and as the years passed, the colors diverged and diverged. Many shades of pink are represented. Here is a mauve one, and the next is a strange blooming purple aster with a glowing almost orange golden center.

At the end of the season, the goldenrod is the last hold-out.
